4. The Homestead Funds

The Homestead Funds represent the financial obligations of the developer, Homestead Land Holdings Limited, as calculated by the City of Ottawa under the cash-in-lieu-of-parkland agreement in relation to the construction of the apartment building at 99 Range Road. They are to be applied to the funding of a public amenity and Homestead is to receive public recognition in respect of this amenity.

ASH received two proposals (The Grand Gazebo and The Living Gazebo), which were presented at the ASH Community Conversation meeting on March 16. These proposals were discussed at the ASH Board meeting on March 30. The Board selected the Living Gazebo proposal which will be presented at the ASH Annual Meeting on April 27.

5. ASH Board of Directors Meetings

The ASH Board of Directors meets monthly (except for July and December), generally on the last Monday of the month, at the Sandy Hill Community Centre and virtually, from 7 to 8:30 pm. ASH members will receive an email with a meeting reminder and a Zoom link before each meeting. Meetings for 2026 are: May 25, June 29, August 24, September 28, October 26 and November 26.

1. Bus Plastic Seats Pilot

On April 2, OC Transpo launched a six-month pilot project to test new plastic seats on a bus to see how well they work in everyday service.  Other cities have adopted similar seating for public transit, reporting easier cleaning and reduced maintenance costs. Bus #4715 is the specific vehicle participating in this pilot project. Feedback will be collected via online surveys. The pilot project runs until October 2. Click here for more information and to participate in the online survey.

2. Alternate Neighbourhood Crisis Response (ANCHOR)

In June ANCHOR is expanding to Ward 12 which includes Sandy Hill. ANCHOR is a 24/7, community-led, culturally sensitive, and equity-focused response to mental health and substance use crises, which dispatches skilled teams to people experiencing such crises. ANCHOR assesses the client and offers services that are safe and tailored to individual needs. ANCHOR also provides well-being checks, referrals, connections to other services, resources and information.

Community members in Sandy Hill can call 2-1-1, instead of 9-1-1, if they or someone else is experiencing a mental health and/or substance use crisis.

Click here for more information on the ANCHOR Program.

3. Keep Your Bike Safe

Now is the time of year when we look forward to using our bicycles. There have already been a few reports of stolen bicycles in our neighbourhood. Locking your bike is an important strategy, but you also want to make sure you’re locking it in a way that reduces the risk of theft. Here are some great tips to reduce the risk of bike theft:

  • Park in a location with plenty of people around to notice any suspicious activity.  In front of a restaurant or busy coffee shop are great choices!

  • Make sure the ring, post or rack you are using to lock up is secured properly to the ground and has a barrier preventing your bike from being lifted off the rack.

  • Ensure the lock goes around the bike’s frame, and one wheel (or both if possible). A cable and U-lock make a great combo for locking up anywhere!

  • Use the best lock you can! A little extra spent on a lock will provide much better protection for your bike.

  • Make sure to secure your bike at home too! Keep it locked up inside a shed, storage area or backyard if you can.

You can also register your bike with the Ottawa Police at project529.com/garage. It's easy to register. Simply download the app from Apple or Google, input your information, and even upload an image of your bike. This service is free.
